The greatest show on earth comes to the marching band field with "Cirque Noir." Throughout the performance, we take the audience on a journey that explores the darker side of the circus, pulling them to the edge of their seats with haunting melodies and dazzling visual effects. When darkness falls, the big top rises with "Cirque Noir."
1. Come One, Come All!
Dark, haunting melodies and electronics open the production, building to a powerful impact that will grab the audience and have them eagerly awaiting the second act.
2. Under the Big Top
The second movement utilizes minor harmonics and a dark 3/4 waltz to portray the various acts of the circus. The opening trumpet soloist can be utilized as an "act" to begin the movement, as more sections layer in and become involved in the show, as the composition develops to a full ensemble impact and performance. The original commissioning band chose to add upper woodwinds on flags during the final impact, adding more color and visual support to the ending.
3. Death Defying Acts
The final movement has enormous visual potential as we begin with a percussion feature, alternating between major and minor chordal structures and increasing in tempo to simulate the more heart-racing, dangerous acts of the circus. Winds are then featured in sections and as a full ensemble with chromatic runs, ultimately building into a full ensemble, high energy ending that is sure to bring the crowd to their feet.
This show was originally commissioned for Wilson High School in Reading, PA.
